Weekly Wrap Up!

Welcome to a special edition of "The indiExhibit Weekly Wrap Up"! Today we not only post our wrap up on a different day, but we are also looking back at what the indies have been doing for the past TWO weeks! Are you ready to get creative? We are! Let's see what fun stuff everyone has been up to!

Jessica Mendez of MoonBunny's Haven has been super busy the past two weeks! She has recently launched her Thingz n' Stuffs shop where you can find beautiful crocheted broaches, colorful jewelry, and of course, plenty of whimsical MoonBunny items!

She has also been hard at work creating two different styles of MoonBunny dollies to her shop. You can find the original MoonBunny (as seen top left) here and the adorable new mini

On top of all of the fun crocheting she has been working on, Jessica has somehow found time to create an amazing wine label (shown below) for the Artiste Art Label Contest. 16 finalists will be announced on the 16th of this month so keep your fingers and toes crossed that our Jess will be one of those chosen! Wow Jessica, you have been one busy bee!

Another busy indie is Tabitha Jones of Gothic Toggs. She entered the "Cute Monster Design Contest" over on Deviant Art with this funky design.

Gothic Toggs has also added a brand new series of ACEO's to their Etsy shop. These dream guys (seen below) are definitely collectible and limited edition so get yours before they are snatched up!

It has been a record breaking sales month for Gothic Toggs, whose sales have regularly increased since becoming an indiExhibit member, with her dark, special occasion invitations going out like hot cakes. Some of her best sellers for the past two weeks include these lovely designs below.

Kirsten Edwards of Hinterland Harmony created this beautiful custom illustration (below) for fellow indiExhibit member and admin assistant, Heather Crow Nelson of Brianne's Basics. Isn't it sweet?!

Kirsten has also been preparing to launch her new Teddy Bear line on Zazzle. These adorable bears can be found on everything from soft and cuddly throw pillows (seen below) and infant clothing to fun invitations and stylish jewelry! They make perfect gifts for baby showers, birthdays, or just because!

Kerry Rockwood White, active indie, admin assistant, and author of The Fair Hero Series, got some exciting news this past week! The Editor-In-Chief of the Mid-West Book Review has requested a review copy of her book, Much Ado About Russian. (seen below) Congratulations Kerry! Well deserved!

Joanna Nagle of Parrothead Jewelry/Jewelry by Jo has recently opened up a Zazzle gallery showcasing photos of her beautiful jewelry on a ton of fun products, including stationery and jewelry boxes! Fun! She has also been working on something new this week. (seen below) Urban chic and asymmetrical jewelry is her new passion. In her own words, "I dream of these pieces and sometime putting them together, getting them just right, is very difficult. This piece took about 4 days to complete. I hope that you like it!"

Kristie Silva of Little Bit Creepie has just finished a new member to the Strange family. His name is Thumps (below) and he will be appearing in an upcoming chapter within the next couple of months.

Carol Creech of Carol Creech Studio has recently completed and listed her first coptic bound art journal on Etsy! This nature-inspired journal is hand-bound by Carol herself, using a Coptic (or chain-stitch) binding. This allows it to lay flat when open, making it wonderful for writing or artwork.

The journal (left) is covered with 80 gm Tamarind Leaf backed mulberry and bamboo paper and contains 5 signatures of hand-torn Wyndstone archival, heavyweight 100% cotton fiber, acid-free paper (total of 80 pages.)

This lovely journal measures a nice 6 inches wide by 8 inches tall, and would make an elegant, yet practical gift for the artist in your life or for your own special event or purpose.

The inspiration fairy stopped by for a visit with Joanna Lesinski of Babcia's Heart for a one on one chat. These adorable cupcake headbands were the result of that chat!

The first of two headband designs is a cheerful pink toned cupcake trio (seen left). This adorable headband is perfect for class pictures, Valentine's Day , OR for your little princess's birthday crown!

The second of these super cute headbands features three skull topped cupcakes, simply perfect for tweens and teens! These dark and stylish gothic inspired headbands are sure to be a number one seller!

We have some really exciting news from the ladies of Horsefeathers Gifts! Their beautiful Custom Keepsake Fingerprint Pendant was picked as a celeb gift favorite for Valentine's Day by OK! magazine! WOW! HUGE congrats, ladies!

Shannon Rene' "Shaz" Justice of Lollipop Labs Studios just launched her Chinese Element series and has started to publish them on a variety of products from sleek water bottles to cozy throw pillows. She was even awarded with a TBA (Today's Best Award) for this hot "Element: Fire" design, showcased on one of the new Rickshaw messenger bags (below right). All elements will be available soon!

Shannon has also finished designing the display product that will be featured at the upcoming 2012 Academy Awards Gift Lounge on February 23rd. She chose a Chinese "Year of the Dragon" theme, with of course, a gothic twist. (shown below) The rest of the Chinese Horoscope signs will be created and available for purchase throughout the year of 2012.

indiExhibit admin, Nia Brown, participates in The Partnership for Art

Nia Brown, amazing artist, administrator and active member of The indiExhibit, participated in an Art Gallery Showing this past Thursday, January 26th @ Allied Arts. Nia and other artists have donated their time and original artwork to the YWCA Emergency Women’s Shelter. (In Partnership with the Junior League, YWCA, Allied Arts of Yakima, and local artists.)

The exhibit lasts until February 3rd, then all of the images will be donated to the YWCA. Since most of us in indiEland can't physically attend her gallery showing, Nia took some photos to share with all of us!

Weekly Wrap Up!

Happy Sunday everyone! We hope you have all had a super creative and productive week. We know that all of us indies have! Would you like to see what we have been working on this week? C'mon...check it out!

Tom and Jennifer Davis of TJ Gallery Glass participated in Artsfest, an art for charity event, over the weekend and helped to raise $3600 for charity! Way to go!

Peacock & Lime has been working on a brand new collection of vintage-inspired necklaces, earrings and bracelets. You can take a special sneak peek at a few of these beauties to the left.

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, take a moment to check out what lovely creations are available for purchase. Not only will you find the perfect gift for that special lady, you will also be helping out a small business, too!

Gothic Toggs has recently had their creepy cool ACEO "Blood Witch Fantasy Goth" featured in the "All you need is blood, blood...Blood is all you need" Treasury on Etsy. Super exciting! Great piece!

It is 'Oscar Week' in "indieLand" so many of our members are hard at work preparing their products to be included in the swag bags given to the celebrities and members of the press at the upcoming 2012 Academy Awards Gift Lounge. Parrothead Gifts/Jewelry by Jo is no exception!

These beautiful earrings that Joanna has called "Waterfalls", were created from sterling silver ear wires, beads and a variety of gemstones and faceted crystal. These gorgeous earrings are another example of the quality craftsmanship that you will find from the members of The indiExhibit.

Shelley Mangus from Unique Beaded Gifts & Jewelry has also been busy with 'Oscar Week'. Here is what she had to say in her own words, "It has been a wonderful experience learning new techniques and styles in order to create these earrings that will be gifted to celebrities. The wonderful dark maroon satin beads I found to make the first two sets are much richer in color and depth than a camera can pick up with a lens. I have 4 more styles I am creating for this gifting lounge which will be completed next week." We can't wait to see what you come up with next!

Founder and active indiExhibit member, Shannon Rene' Justice of Lollipop Labs Studios has had a crazy week to say the least! Shannon has been named one of the Official Designers for Play Bling and her first iPhone Case has been announced and is now available for purchase. Each case is made with over 1000 genuine Swarovski Elements and is 100% hand set by skilled craftsmen.

To the right is, by far, the greatest item *EVER* created specifically for Shannon--a custom tote bag created just for her, by none other than her idol, Tim Burton! Yes, THAT Tim Burton. Tim had heard through the grapevine from a fellow indiExhibit member about how Shannon had missed seeing him at his book signing at the LACMA this past fall and wanted to do something special for her. As you can see from the picture to the right, he included several images of him and his work, and included her name and "The indiExhibit". This is just one of the many truly priceless items that he is sending her! Needless to day, Shannon is a very happy indie :)

This week has also been super busy for Babcia's Heart. First up was a yarn hunt for the perfect neutral baby yarn for a special custom order for Baby Oliver - a Baby Hoodie in Teddy Bear Brown. Remember, custom orders are always welcome!

Next up was another custom order for a collaborative effort between Gothic Toggs, Mai Whey Clay Designs, and Babcia's Heart. Joanna's contribution was this soft 100% cotton washcloth. Stay tuned for the finish collab!

The indies are always pushing the envelope and trying new and exciting products. Kerry Rockwood White of KRW Designs has introduced her newest line of products this week--stunning clutch purses!

These beautiful pieces of art aren't available to the public just yet, but rest assured, as soon as they are, we will let you know! Expect to see these babies on the red carpet!

Jessica Mendez of MoonBunny's Haven has been feeling really crafty this week and has started to create this adorable Hello Kitty doll as seen here. Jessica is amazingly talented at making cute little critters like this so we can't wait to see the finished product!

Heather Crow Nelson of My Work of Heart announced a wonderful giveaway on her blog. My Memories Suite Software to help you create beautiful scrapbook pages for your friends and family! Giveaway ends this Tuesday so hurry and enter today!

Annette Aben of innerchildart has been as busy as a bee creating beautiful bracelets for our upcoming blog giveaways, as well as for gifts for two beautiful ladies struggling with Cancer.

Our very own Crazy Clown Lady has spent her creative hours this week working on a logo for a local California band. They're a Grateful Dead tribute band so she incorporated the "Steal Your Face" that the Dead use as their logo into the background. It looks amazing, Kathy! Keep it up!

Featured Member: Crafty's Creations

Crafty's Creations is the brainchild of Cori Cambanes. Her business specialty? "A uniquely diverse artist who isn't limited to one medium."

Cori started her business in October 2009 after meeting a girl named Kelly online. She discovered Cori's talent and pursued her to open a business. Cori knows where she started. She thanks Kelly every single day!

Cori is different than many artists. She's inspired by her materials as opposed to the world around her. "Most of the time I sit down with wire and barely an idea in my head, and come up with a beautiful piece of jewelry," said Cori.

Most artists remember their biggest successes, and Cori's had a special meaning. A customer placed a large order for Christmas of her family tree of life necklaces. One posted photo about these necklaces has turned into numerous orders, including a special request for a large wall hanging version! In fact, this Tree Of Life necklace is her favorite piece to create. Cori says, "It brings such joy to the person wearing it because it represents their family. That warms my heart!"

Like so many of us, Cori has hopes and dreams for her business. "In three years," Cori says. "I will have successfully entered into the celebrity market. I also am beginning this year by teaching online crochet in jewelry classes. I also will be contributing tutorials on projects for a web site. I am starting my creative plan of attack as we speak!"

Cori is not only a talented artist, she's also as quirky as the rest of us! Her wacky talent? "I can pick up anything with my toes!" (Now that's a talent I want!) She's taken menial jobs to support her craft business, including a job at Hancock Fabrics which she described as "torture" since she wasn't able to make something out of everything! Best perk of the job? Oh yeah, the discount!

We all have dreams of being famous or at least well known. And when the movie of Cori's life is made, she already knows who will play her. "Ashley Judd. I think she could handle my crazy!"

Weekly Wrap Up!

Hi everyone and welcome back to our Weekly Wrap up, a weekly post where you get to see what the indiExhibit members have been up to! There has been a flutter of activity this week. Check it out!

Founder and active member of The indiExhibit, Shannon Rene' "Shaz" Justice of Lollipop Labs Studios, has recently entered a contest to design cover art for the band, "The Cure". Proceeds from this event go to Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity that focuses on the needs of teenagers and young adults by providing specialist teenage units in NHS hospitals. You can vote for her entry here.

Cherie Kollee of Girlybaby Bows, Bands and Tutu's for Babies and Kids is starting on 30 Valentine's Day Special Pageant Headbands for Ferrara Modeling Agency. She has been named the official Pageant Wear Designer to help the first time pageant contestants.

She is also working on a custom maternity sash, 1st Birthday Minnie Mouse Tutu Set and a few more pairs of Peacock wing sets for a newborn Photo Shoot! It has been a busy week as she is heading into her Spring and Wedding Line!

During this past week, Shelly Mangus of Unique Beaded Gifts, has started a project to provide a hand made beaded ornament to the Mission of Hope Cancer Fund which has helped her Nephew through his entire ordeal that started when he was only 15 months old. This ornament will be available for people to purchase and the funds will go to the Mission of Hope Cancer Fund. It will have the year on it, the MHCF Logo and Believe Logo and can be customized for those who want to memorialize a loved one lost or one who is still fighting for life.

Shelley also finished a custom bracelet and earrings for a local client to match the 3 Dimensional Hummingbird Necklace she purchased back in December.(both can be seen to the right)

Joanna Lesinski of Babcia's Heart recently launched her adorable line of Valentine's Day products including Rosette and Heart hair clippies and cupcake amigurumi (not edible of course!).

She has also signed on to do the 20 Baby Swag Bags and started making color samples of baby bonnets. She has even had an amateur modeling session with 3 month old Malcolm with said bonnets. Isn't he precious???

It isn't uncommon for indiExhibit members to team up and make something super amazing! Corinna Cambanes of Crafty's Creations and Kelly Burr of MaiWheyClay Designs are no exception. Corinna, or as the group lovingly calls her, 'Cori', is a HUGE fan of the band, Blue October and created this hat as a tribute to them. Kelly has created some handmade buttons to match her creation, and they are currently planning on collaborating on some new jewelry designs with these buttons.

Chelsea Farmer of Horsefeathers Gifts just finished getting her new studio together. It looks FABULOUS!

(Don't know about you, but I am totally jealous of this work space!)

Her doggies seem to be enjoying her studio as well!

Horsefeathers has also been invited to show off their beautiful handcrafted jewelry at the upcoming 2012 Academy Awards Gift Suite. We know you will be well received!

Author and poet, Noelle Dunn, began writing a new book this past weekend. She is writing a book that chronicles the stories of women who have fought the incurable disease - Endometriosis. She is gathering submissions from other "endo" warriors. Noelle will be accepting submissions from these women in the form of poetry, art, or personal narrative formats. The indiExhibit is very excited about this project as Endometriosis awareness month is in March and Noelle would like to release the book right at that time. She believes this book will be different from other books on this disease as it will be solely from the "patient's" point of view. It will serve to personalize and educate others about how this negatively impacts lives as well as raising awareness for this disease. Noelle suffered herself and wasn't diagnosed until she was 35. She is now 39. In her situation, her body did not respond to any treatment which ultimately led to a total hysterectomy two years ago. As with EVERY week, this one has been very busy for indiExhibit member, Coriander Shea. She is in the middle of creating her 1st premier oracle deck as an artist, "The Sidhe Queen Oracle." Right now she in the middle of Aeranelii's River card; Aeranelii is also known as the Queen of the Night.

The card is going by very quickly and turning out more beautiful than even she could imagine. In her own words, "Seriously, I look at the picture and constantly think, "Did I create that?!?" This new piece should be finished by the middle of this coming week!

Coriander also in the middle of making up a bunch of new cross stitch designs for Queen Kat Designs, also an indiExhibit member! This is an ongoing thing so if you're an artist looking for a cross-stitch licensee, then get a hold of Vicki!

Last, but certainly not least, Coriander is taking part in EMG's Sketchfest which she participates in regularly! There are a few of us artists who take Sketchfest very, very seriously and she happens to be one of them! Sketchfest is an open sketching community event that features a lot of prominent and up-and-comers of the Fantasy art sub-genre. Its open to everyone, regardless of skill level. We end our weekly wrap up with an update on our Mega Swag Bag Raffle. So far we have sold 364 tickets! One lucky winner will be randomly chosen and win the ENTIRE swag bag worth over $1400, yes, $1400!! Each Monday we will reveal a few of the prizes that are in the bag. Last week we revealed three of the gifts--three stunning handcrafted pieces of jewelry retailed from $45-$125 EACH!

This is one of the gorgeous prizes from the raffle; a Swarovski Crystal and Sterling Silver Rosary Necklace by Annette Aben of innerchildart.

This vintage inspired beaded necklace is another of the beautiful prizes that the winner will take home. This lovely piece was designed by Shelly Mangus of Unique Beaded Gifts.

Our last prize is a colorful and funky design by Kelly Burr of MaiWheyClay Designs. Each piece was carefully handcrafted by Kelly herself.

Happy Sunday everyone! Today we are introducing yet another new addition to our blog--The Weekly Wrap Up! Every Sunday we will post what our members have been up to for the week. Some of the have been featured on popular TV shows, some of them have just finished up making their custom products for famous celebrities, others have just published some really stylish products! So, if you want to stay up to date on what your favorite indie member has been doing, check in with us every Sunday!

A day in the life of an indie...

We spy a beautiful necklace created by Nikkay Fashions on the popular TV show "Glam Fairy"! Way to go!!! That isn't the only news from this indiExhibit member! Nikkay Fashions is also gearing up for the Baltimore Fashion Week! WOW! We can't wait to see the photos from that event!

Gothic Toggs has also been super busy this past week! They just launched their bath and body line "Sanquin Lover", a "fruit" scent with high notes of citrus and berry, and undertones of lush forest green. There are body sprays and lip balms currently available and Bubble bath, bath salts and scented candles are on the way!

Also new this week is a whole line of designer Rickshaw messenger bags by Gothic Toggs. Not only are these bags super stylish, they are highly functional as well!

Next we find out what Parrothead Jewelry/ Jewelry by Jo has been up to this week! The indiExhibit has been putting together a special swag bag just for Twilight star, Chaske Spencer, and Parrothead Jewelry was one of the members that participated in this event.

They have since been creating several similar pieces to the one that was designed and given to Chaske as seen in these two photos. Parrothead Jewelry also participated in the swag bags given to the ladies of the Miss California and Miss Teen California US Pageant. They provided beautiful handcrafted earrings to the participants of the pageant, packaged in gorgeous leopard print drawstring bags. They are currently preparing for the Miss Nevada US pageant on January 29th.

Little Bit Creepie is back from a mini break and has been working on some new comics for all of their fans! Little Bit Creepie will be back this Friday January 20th with a new chapter called "Snow Fright". Make sure to check it out and share with all of your creepie loving friends!

The ladies of Horsefeathers Gifts have kept quite busy as well! They also recently sent off an assortment of stunning handcrafted jewelry to the ladies of the Miss California and Miss Teen California US Pageants, and will be having more of their products given to the contestants of the upcoming Miss Nevada US Pageant. Horsefeathers also just finished creating a beautiful custom Mother's Day pendant for Mariah Carey, made from fine silver, crystal quartz and stamped with the names of her twins. Congratulations ladies! Well done!

There were a couple of celebrity sightings this week as well. Event rep and indiExhibit admin. assistant, Heather Crow Nelson of Brianne's Basics, saw the beautiful Halle Berry and her daughter at Disneyland! She has also spent this past week updating The indiExhibit Daily and preparing her products for the upcoming 2012 Academy Awards Gift Lounge. YAY!

Halle Berry isn't the only hot celeb seen out and about this week! Stacey Johnson of London Blue Designs was able to snap this picture of Elmo with beautiful indiExhibit baby, Bella :) She is also currently working on a custom Coraline-inspired top hat for a client. What a fun week!

The super popular character sculpture of actor Hugh Laurie created by indiExhibit member, The Freaks Factory, is finally up for auction on eBay! Fans of this piece have been literally BEGGING to purchase it, even before it was completely finished! Wonderful job!

27 (and counting!) member of The indiExhibit have contributed products as prizes for the winner of the Mega Swag Bag Raffle. This super sized mega prize is worth over $1400 and includes an assortment of beautiful items including handcrafted jewelry, autographed books, electronics, and MORE!

Tickets will be sold on a tiered scale, starting at $1 until January 23rd. The $1 "Early Bird" tickets are super inexpensive because you are purchasing raffle tickets without seeing the contents of the bag. Every Monday, starting the 23rd, we will reveal photos of a few of the items and the ticket price will go up to $2. All of the proceeds will benefit the group who have recently been awarded our official nonprofit status. More prizes are added all the time and the total value of the prize will continue to go up! Get your tickets today!

DIY Saturday!

Happy Saturday everyone! One of the new things that we are launching in 2012 is "DIY Saturday", a once-a-week blog post featuring a special "Do-It-Yourself" project. One of our Master DIY'ers, Heather Valentine of The Sewing Loft, has created the "KISS How To" series to help us all "Keep It Super Simple"! The indiExhibit will post one of her creative and fun projects each week so make sure to share with all of your craft friends and family!

Today's post will show you how to make good use of all of those free marketing calendars that we get through out the year AND how to use them to keep us super organized at the same time! BONUS: This won't cost you a single cent because you will already have plenty of goodies to use around the house!

Day FOUR of 'Glee Week'

Sue is still hanging in at the top spot for Favorite Glee Cast Member with 51% of the votes at last check in! It doesn't look like anyone has a shot at beating her this late in the game!

Yesterday we asked you what school reporter, Jacob, demanded of Rachel in order to keep him from spilling the story on Quinn. This must have been a super hard one because NOBODY guessed it! The answer is....a pair of Rachel's worn undies. Yup...tis true! She tried to pass off a brand new pair, but it didn't work too well!

Last week we featured Josh Sussman who plays the girl-crazy Jacob on the show so you have already seen most of his celebrity photos. However, we managed to find one in the indie vault of him from the 2011 Golden Globe Awards Gift Lounge presented by GBK!

I'm sure that by now you have heard all about The indiExhibit's partnership with VH1's "Save the Music Foundation" for the 2011 American Music Awards. If not, here is a bit of a recap.

The indiExhibit teamed up with VH1's "Save the Music Foundation" and donated a skateboard deck, designed by indiExhibit member and rep, Kerry Rockwood White of KRW Designs, for celebrities to sign as they visited our table at the AMA Gift Lounge. There are over 25 signatures on the board, including Lil Jon, Soulja Boy, Jojo, Brooke Hogan, and more. This board is now being auctioned off on eBay and all proceeds will benefit the "Save the Music Foundation". You can bid on this amazing piece of pop culture here.

Amigurumi continues to make a splash in Hollywood!

You are probably wondering to yourself, "What on Earth is amigurumi?" I know that is the first thing that I thought when indiExhibit member, Heather Crow Nelson, mentioned it to me. I will help you all out :)

Amigurumi (編みぐるみ^?, lit. crocheted or knitted stuffed toy) is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures. The word is derived from a combination of the Japanese words ami, meaning crocheted or knitted, and nuigurumi, meaning stuffed doll.^[1] Amigurumi are typically animals, but can include artistic renderings or inanimate objects endowed with anthropomorphic features,^[2] as is typical in Japanese culture.

With that being said, let me gush about how Heather's, AND new indiExhibit member April Robinson of Aunt Wednesday's, adorable amigurumi characters have been a HUGE hit in Hollywood!

Back in September, Heather, who is probably the biggest "Glee" fan I know, created a "Sue Silvester" (you know, Jane Lynch's character from the hit show, "Glee") amigurumi doll to display at the 2011 Prime Time Emmy Awards Gift Lounge. Needless to say, her doll was an instant hit with "Glee" cast member, Dot Marie Jones, who plays football coach "Shannon Beiste", so much that she just couldn't leave the gift lounge without her!

Another famous actress also fell in love with Heather's version of Sue, and not only posed for a photo with her, but also contacted her to make an amigurumi character of herself! Who might that actress be? None other than Ms. Loretta Devine herself! The members of The indiExhibit are all about celebrity privacy so Heather didn't announce her special project until she had permission from Ms. Devine, who happily allowed her to blog all her excitement :)

With having such success with her first "Glee" amigurumi doll, Heather decided to try yet another character from the show for her display at the 2011 American Music Awards Gift Lounge. This time, she chose, main character, Rachel Berry as played by Lea Michele. Once again, her dollie was ooooh'd and aaaaaah'd over by another person from "Glee"...choreographer, Zach Woodlee, who posed for many photos with the mini-Rachel.

Heather, who not only reps for The indiExhibit but also runs her very own "Pay It Forward" charity craft site, Brianne's Basics, so she decided that she could use all of the recent fame from her Rachel dollie to help out one of her favorite charities, The Ronald McDonald House. She is hosting a raffle on her site and the first place winner will receive the Rachel Berry Amigurumi doll that was display at the AMA's! You can read all about her raffle on her website.

Last but certainly not least, indiExhibit member, April Robinson of Aunt Wednesday's, has also had some recent success with both her amigurumi AND attracting one of the character's from "Glee"! The 2011 American Music Awards was April's first show and she pulled in a fantastic amount of attention with her "Miss Melody" doll. Not only did she manage to snag the interest of Jasmine V, who opened for Justin Beiber on tour, but also "Glee" cast member, Josh Sussman, who posed for several photos with the whimsical dollie.

Today's featured indiExhibit member is Joanna Lesinski of Babcia’s Heart!

Hello everyone! We have a wonderful treat for you this Sunday evening! We have a great interview with the very talented Joanna Lesinski of Babcia's Heart. Joanna is a brand new indExhibit member who will be participating in her first event this coming week at the American Music Awards!

ie: How did you get started, and are you self taught or did you go to art school?
JL: I started learning how to crochet on a snowy day in 2008 in the mountains of North Carolina. A good friend and I needed a project to keep us busy and she gave me a half hour lesson on how to do the basic crochet stitches. She guided me through my first project and I fell in love with crochet. I have taught myself to read patterns and am branching out into creating my own patterns.

ie: How is your art created?
JL: With a hook, yarn, and a needle...

ie: Where do you get your ideas?
JL: My ideas come from pattern books and free pattern websites. Then I take those designs and modify them and make them my own. Since I am relatively new to crochet I am trying to become more comfortable experimenting with yarn and my own designs.

ie: Who is your inspiration?
JL: Babcia’s Heart was inspired by my Babcia, my Polish grandmother. She always had a hook and a basket of yarn nearby. Sadly, she was unable to pass down her crochet knowledge before she passed away, but it is in my blood. She is always in my heart and that’s what I want people to see that when they see my products.

ie: How many hours in a week do you devote to your craft? How do you juggle spouses, ex-spouses, kids, family, pets, friends, housework, your other job(s) and your craft?
JL: I devote at least 30 hours a week to my craft. My teaching position was cut recently due to the economy and I am back in my childhood home. I have a part time minimum wage job and juggle what my parents want with what I want. Crochet keeps me sane in these uncertain times. It is my escape and my joy.

ie: What type of artistry/creativity did you do when you were a child?
JL: I learned how to do Plastic Canvas when I was 5 and have always loved to create. My mom encouraged me with every kind of child’s craft kit you could find – weaving looms, bead looms, cross stitch, Barbie Knitting Kit – you name it...

ie: Where do you sell your art/product and website info?
JL: I sell on Etsy and I also write a blog about my business

ie: New products?
JL: My newest passion in my crochet is hat and scarf sets like the display piece that I sent to the AMA Awards. I am expanding my color choices. I have also recently expanded my collection of Baby Booties (like the ones I sent in the Swag Bags) to include more colors. I am working on Christmas Amigurumi and more...

ie: What gifting shows have you participated in?
JL: The AMA Awards will be my first gifting show and I am on the edge of my seat about where that will take me and my business.

ie: What are your dreams/goals for your art, your fears?
JL: My current goal for Babcia’s Heart is to be in the black. I started my website in June and am building inventory as much as I can. I have many ideas for things I want to add to my shop, but sadly I only have 2 hands... My biggest fear is that my work will not be seen by people who will appreciate and purchase it.

ie: What are your artistic "can't live withouts" and pet peeves?
JL: My biggest pet peeve is those who tell me that I’ll never make a living with my art. I can’t live without my biggest supporter – my Aunt Norine. She has been in my corner when others have put me down and she encourages me to continue and grow as an artist.

ie: How would you describe your artistic work/ talent?
JL: I would describe my work as cozy and homey. I want my work to make others feel comfortable and at home. I like to think of my work as a modern take on folk art.

ie: How does your personality shine in what you do as an artist?
JL: I put my heart into all of my pieces and I hope my personality shines through.

ie: Were other family members artistic or influential in your creativity?
JL: My influences come from all of the women in my family. Both of my grandmothers, my mom, and my aunt are all creative and I get a piece from each of them. I grew up around craft days and my aunt is very influential with her entrepreneurial spirit.

ie: What do you do on those days everything is going wrong and you have a deadline?
JL: I can be very creative under pressure. I seek comfort from my friends and family when everything seems to be going wrong. They pull me through.

ie: When you get the "less" than desired response to your artistic endeavors how do you handle it? Does it damper your creative energy or drive you to your successes?
JL: Some people who play a major role in my life are very negative about whether or not I will succeed in my business. I use to let it get to me on a regular basis, but I am trying to rise above it and have confidence of my own abilities as an artist. It sometimes brings me down, but not for long... I have great friends who remind me of who I am.

ie: Who would you love to meet?
JL: I would love to meet my fellow indies in person some day. They are a supportive group who welcomed me with open arms and I would love to contribute m ore to their charitable efforts.

Happy Monday everyone! We have a special treat for you today. (no pun intended!) We have a big, juicy interview with the talented Danielle Defelice of Divine Cookie Designs!

Divine Cookie Designs creates beautifully decorated cookie bouquets for all occasions, and we here at indiE HQ can tell you first hand from experience, they are so stunning that you don't want to eat them! (of course, after you have one nibble, you can't help but to try another!)

So, enough jibber jabber from me, on to the interview!

ie: How did you get started, and are you self taught or did you go to art school?

DD: When my kids were little, every Christmas we decorated cookies. Even now that they are adults, they still want to have our annual Christmas Cookie decorating event.

ie: How is your art created?
DD: I always start with a basic sugar cookie – not too sweet because the decorations tend to all the sweetness needed. I use various decorating tools; royal icing, food safe markers, edible paint, sanding sugar. No 2 cookies are ever alike. I would love to move into edible print transfers.

ie: Where do you get your ideas?

DD: Ideas sometimes pop into my head out of the blue but I get a lot of great ideas from the gang @ IE

ie: Who is your inspiration?

DD: All of the artists of IE

ie: How many hours in a week do you devote to your craft?

DD: It depends on what I have going on. I have worked more than 10 hours straight decorating cookies for various craft shows.

ie: How do you juggle spouses, ex-spouses, kids, family, pets, friends, housework, your other job(s) and your craft?

DD: I have a pretty basic job schedule which allows me to be able to work on cookies @ night most of the time. I have a son who has Aspberger’s and my main challenges are interruptions to drive him to his college classes or activities.

ie: What type of artistry/creativity did you do when you were a child?
DD: I drew a lot when I was younger. I did not get into any art classes until my Senior year of High School at which point, my teacher asked me…”Where have you been for 4 years?” I remember she posted a painting I did of a giant hot fudge sundae in the cafeteria. It hung there for a few years after I graduated.

ie: Where do you sell your art/product and website info?

DD: www.facebook.com/divinecookiedesigns and local craft shows. I’m just really getting started.

ie: New products?

DD: Looking forward to making some awesome Christmas designs. See facebook page for lots of pics!

ie: What gifting shows have you participated in?

ie: Describe your Experiences with SWAG gifting.

DD: Seeing a picture of 2 celebrities with one of my cookies was an amazing feeling. I jumped up and down screaming “That’s my cookie” over and over LOL

ie: Received Any press contacts from the gifting suites or displays?
DD: So far, no.

ie: Charities you are involved with?

DD: The Sunshine Foundation

ie: What are your dreams/goals for your art, your fears?

DD: My dream is to own a store front where I can not only sell my cookies and arrangements, but also offer decorating parties and classes. Decorating cookies brings out the child in all of us!

ie: What are your artistic "can't live withouts" and pet peeves?

DD: Oh gosh, when my mom helps me, she gets frosting EVERYWHERE….literally on the front and back of the cookie. I am such a neat freak when it comes to the frosting. It has to be as smooth as can be on the face and the sides must be clean. :)

ie: How would you describe your artistic work/ talent?

DD: Unique…if I can draw it on paper, I can put it on a cookie.

ie: How does your personality shine in what you do as an artist?
DD: I love butterflies and I think that they are my best design.

ie: Were other family members artistic or influential in your creativity?
DD: My mom has been supportive. She has been spreading the word throughout her company about my cookies. I have done about 4 congratulatory arrangements for them.

ie: What do you do on those days everything is going wrong and you have a deadline?

DD: I walk away for a little while, take a deep breath and then get back at it with a fresh perspective. I know I can make it work if I just have patience.　

ie: When you get the "less" than desired response to your artistic endeavors how do you handle it?
DD: Move on to the next opportunity. I had a woman at a craft show look at my cookies and say “I can do THAT”. Most people don’t realize how much time and energy goes into creating just one cookie design. I challenge them to try it.

ie: Does it damper your creative energy or drive you to your successes?
DD: It drives me.

ie: Who are your favorite celebrities?

DD: Sandra Bullock, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds. Russell Crowe to name a few. I am a big movie buff so its hard to say who my real favorite is.

ie: Who would you love to meet?
DD: The tall dark handsome stranger with the money to invest in my talent (business) ;)

Turkey Day the IE Way!

Lynne Reichhart has found her bliss by being an artist. It is not what she is, but who she is. She loves to create vibrant paintings from scenes that she enjoys. She tries to interpret her subject, always sharing a piece of herself with the viewer and hopefully continuing to grow and hone her craft. These beautiful paintings will surely put your home in the festive mood all year around. Simply magnificent!

Here is her painting of a nice scene of a fall farmers market. The color of the building is just so unique that she had to take a reference photo and paint it!

This painting represents one of her favorite spots, and I can see why! I think it’s mine now, too! Beautiful work one can look at and feel peace right away.

Heidi Urbansk started making jewelry to expand her creative horizons and stretch her imagination. She is self taught and her works of art are fabulous! She loves adding wire to a piece to give it an interesting touch. She loves natural stones. And sometimes if a piece of glass isn't quite right, she whacks it with a hammer. Now that’s the way to get the creative juices flowing!

The entire process is a visual and tactile experience for her. It starts in her imagination, and ends with her finished, tangible piece of art.

Here is a one of a kind handmade and fabulous ring. Make a statement with this funky cocktail ring...and make your hand happy.

The ring is made from an Agate dark orange spice colored stone donut with a fresh water pearl focal. The Agate measures 1 1/4 inches in diameter and rises about 1/4 of an inch off the sterling plated wide band. The band measures 1/4 of an inch and is super comfy to wear. The aqua pearl measures about 8mm.

Orange Bling Ring is an orange glass focal on a twisted adjustable rope band. The ring base is sterling plated, and the focal measures a little over 3/4 of an inch in diameter. Ring rises about 1/2 an inch from the base of the ring.

Lisa Hafapea Mayette has lovely art and designs at her shop on Zazzle. She says she has yet to encounter a form of art that she doesn’t like. Nicola loves to draw. She likes to draw things she is interested in at the time and usually does a subject to death. Kids illustrations are her favourite, as she says she is still a bit of a kid herself ( mentally not physically.) Her style is probably a bit more cartoon like, but she creates objects rather than characters. She only started doing something with her pictures about a year ago and she is really pleased with the responses she has had. It gives her a real buzz when someone buys one of my designs.

Interview with indiExhibit member, Shelley Mangus of Unique Beaded Gifts & Jewelry

Happy Tuesday everyone! We here at The indiExhibit Blog Staff hope that you have all had a wonderful Halloween! Today we have a fun indepth interview with one of our amazing jewelry designers, Shelley Mangus of Unique Beaded Gifts and Jewelry!

ie: How did you get started, and are you self taught or did you go to art school?
SM: When I was forced to close my contracting company and file bankruptcy I took up beading with my great friend Jeanne Bowman. Before I knew it I was making ornaments and holiday items and then it let into Jewelry.

ie: How is your art created?
SM: I design on paper then lay it out in beads, then I actually create the first item and spend hours, days or weeks getting it exactly the way I want it. Once the first one is made I can replicate quite easily.

ie: Where do you get your ideas?
SM: Some of them come from Patterns made by Dragon, Boleks, PlaSteel… Most of them come from my own thoughts. I can be driving down the street, see something unique and then go home and turn it into an ornament or a piece of jewelry.

ie: Who is your inspiration?
SM: My Husband first and foremost; if he had not believed in me when I started in business for myself some 20 yrs ago I would have never had the success I have today. My Granddaughters and my Son are the other inspirations in my life. As a Cancer survivor I see each day as a blessing as I wasn’t to live past the age of 19yrs… Look at me now, 45yrs old and loving every minute of every day!.

ie: How many hours in a week do you devote to your craft?
SM: 40 plus hours a week.

ie: How do you juggle spouses, ex-spouses, kids, family, pets, friends, housework, your other job(s) and your craft?
SM: It is hard sometimes as my creativity will take over and get into a zone where I do not wish to be disturbed and this can cause issues at times. My husband and I have an agreement that if I get into a zone, he will let me know I need to “break out of the zone” for a short period of time and give me the time to get to a good stopping point before he expects me to actually stop what I am doing. This works very well. My Son is grown and has 3 daughters of his own so that is never an issue. When they visit us I simply shut down the office and my granddaughters and I “play” in my creation room, they love it there as much as I do and they are very creative themselves, I get lots of ideas from them while we play and create neat things together. I always make sure I take time out for my friends and family at least a few times a week, even if it is no more than a good conversation on the phone over a cup of coffee. House work is easy; my husband does whatever I don’t get done as long as it is not the dishes.

ie: What type of artistry/creativity did you do when you were a child?
SM: My Mother taught me how to make Styrofoam ornaments using straight pins sequins and beads at the age of 7yrs old. From then on I loved creating pretty things. By the time I was 10yrs old I was drawing and designing things. When I married at 16yrs of age, I had Cancer and was told I would not live past 19yrs of age. I stopped creating things and went to work and also finished school, picked up making beaded items around age 25.

ie: Where do you sell your art/product and website info?
SM: I do craft shows and fairs

ie: What gifting shows have you participated in?
SM: I am participating in the 2011 AMA’s for the first time, I shipped my items to Kathy 10/29/11. I am so excited to be a part of this gifting group.

ie: Describe your Experiences with SWAG gifting.
SM: The 2011 AMA’s will be my first one. I had so much fun creating 50 different styles of bracelets so each one was unique. I created my very own photo style gift card to go with the bracelets. I am very proud of myself and feel that this will be a great success for me.

ie: Received Any press contacts from the gifting suites or displays?
SM: I am waiting to hear back from my local papers on a press release I sent announcing my participation in the 2011 AMA’s Swag Gift program.

ie: The indiExhibit is all about charity and giving back. What charities you are involved with?
SM: Mission of Hope Cancer Fund

This charity is run by my husbands cousin who has suffered colon cancer and who now helps our 18yr old Nephew get through his colon cancer treatments, he has a rare form of cancer that only 10 children in the world have ever gotten, he was diagnosed at 15yrs of age. As a survivor or uterine, stomach and breast cancer I am very into these kinds of charities.

ie: What are your dreams/goals for your art, your fears?
SM: My dream is to make a full time living making my items and selling them.
I hope to get better and better with each piece of jewelry or each holiday item I make.
I fear that cancer or arthritis will keep me from doing what I love.

ie: What are your artistic "can't live withouts" and pet peeves?
SM: I cannot live without making at least one thing a week and communicating with other creative people.
Pet Peeve is when others try to bring me down by saying “you’ll never make a living doing that!”

ie: How would you describe your artistic work/ talent?
SM: It is Unique and most pieces are one of a kind.

ie: How does your personality shine in what you do as an artist?
SM: I am a happy go lucky person who believes in life and all that it has to offer, I try to make my pieces shine like each day I am alive.

ie: Were other family members artistic or influential in your creativity?
SM: Yes my Mother and Grandmother they were both very creative people.

ie: What do you do on those days everything is going wrong and you have a deadline?
SM: I take one completed piece in my hand, I go outside regardless of the weather, I hold it up in the light and as I gaze at it I remind myself that “this piece was once a pile of beads and thread and wire, it only became beautiful when I relaxed and took the time to put my feelings into how it should look” Then I go back inside, place that piece in view of where I am working and I say “what is on this table will be a wonderful piece, relax, view in your mind what you want it to be and get to work on it”. 9 out of 10 times this makes everything that went wrong become energy that I put into making the piece within the deadline.

ie: When you get the "less" than desired response to your artistic endeavors how do you handle it?
SM: I thank them for their honesty and remind myself that no 2 people like the same thing and therefore it only matters that I create as someone out there will like my artistic creations, just not this particular person or group today.

ie: Does it damper your creative energy or drive you to your successes?
SM: It drives me, as I am a pleaser and always want at least one item to touch every person.

ie: Who are your favorite celebrities?
SM: That is a tough one, I love them all for they each are individual people who bring to the screen or stage their artistic talent so I really don’t have favorites.

ie: Who would you love to meet?
SM: Family: My half brother from Kentucky, I haven’t seen him since he was 9 yrs old. When our Father passed away his mother (my stepmother) did not allow any contact with him at all. He is grown now and I have no idea where he is, I just wish him happiness and success.

Behind the scenes at the 2011 Prime Time Emmy Awards...

"My first experience repping for The IndiExhibit was this past June at the MTV Movie Awards. That time, I'd had only a few days notice to get ready, and I still wasn't prepared for the frantic day. This time I had months to prepare, and I STILL felt unprepared at certain points, LOL!

The first thing I learned was, the unexpected was the rule, not the exception. Second thing I learned, was frantic didn't begin to describe it.

I arrived on Friday evening. (Spending time with my girls, indiExhibit member and admin. assistant Kathy and indiExhibit CEO Shannon, was the best possible way to prepare for the next day!) Waking up early Saturday morning and looking right at Capital Records outside your window is quite an experience. Then begins the first rush of the day. Morning prep, getting yourself ready, getting dressed, getting our celeb photo lists synced and ready, getting packed, refilling bags & boxes if needed, & getting to venue... all within about 2 hours.

Once at the venue, I always take a moment to just breathe in the atmosphere and decor of the venue. Being a rep is such an amazing experience, you frequently don't have a chance or remember to just enjoy it. Vendors are divided into 7 or more separate rooms. In our room we had everything from gourmet chocolate to Piggy Pillows. You never know what will be in your room!

Once we had arrived, we had even more work to do, and were quickly running out of time to finish. We had to rearrange the display table, restock our giveaways, and I sat down with our Day 1 rep, Joan, to sync our celebrity photo list. At every event, I do detailed lists. We receive a "cheat sheet" of sorts which tells us which celebrities are coming, what time they're arriving, and what their latest shows/movies have been. Unfortunately, this IS Hollywood, and Hollywood runs on its own time schedule.

indiExhibit members create the BEST indie products!

At about 9:45am, the event coordinators call all the vendors for a meeting, gives us any changes, and generally just pumps us up. Then, the Gifting Lounge opens! While this event is glamorous and fun, it's also incredibly difficult and exhausting. You get maybe 10 minutes total throughout the day to sit at your booth and eat. The vendors really look out for each other, and whenever one person goes for a water/soda run, they'll get something for the other vendors. There's usually a small break before celebs arrive to run to each room. That's always a plus, because you may get inspiration for your display.

Occasionally we have celebs arrive at 10am on the dot, but usually a mad rush starts at 11am. And this was no exception! Throughout the day it's a situation of "hurry up and wait". This event was MUCH more hectic! At any given time we had 3-4 celebs in our room. On a couple of occasions, I had 2 waiting for me at once! I always get nervous when the first celeb comes up, and this time it was Jennifer Carpenter and Julie Benz together. Double whammy! You do your spiel, show the products, hand them their goodies, and jump out of the way for the pictures. Sometimes they contractually can't pose with your products, so they ask to pose with you or just in front of the table (i.e. Chaka Khan & America Ferrera). The wonderful thing is that we are definitely becoming well known at these events, and celebs look for our booth now.

In between celebs, you have a moment to breathe, regroup, fix your display, improve your spiel, take notes on the celebs and what they posed with, and maybe eat if you're really lucky! Then comes the next rush. In all, I believe there were 40+ celebrities that came through on Saturday alone.

Being a rep is really such a thrill, but it's also one of the hardest jobs you could ever do. Us reps aren't paid to do these events, and it's definitely not for everyone. We do these events because we love The IndiExhibit and fully believe in the community & our artisans."
